Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Chapter 6:Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

What does it mean when Cassie says, “His eyes, which showed a great warmth as he hugged and kissed us now, often has a cold, distant glaze, and there was an aloofness in him which the boys and I could never quite bridge” (90).

Uncle Hammer is angry and disillusioned. He wants to step up and help his family.... he resents the way they're treated, but he can't do anything without starting further trouble. Hammer moved away for a reason.... he didn't want to live this way anymore, and yet, he was watching his family subjected to racism and injustice. The children don't understand the change, and Hammer doesn't know how to express it.
