Earlier in the chapter, Big Ma has assured Little Man that the sun will shine again. Her words are an intentional metaphor, reminding the child not to lose hope. Though the children temporarily lose hope after being forced into the gully, they triumph over the bus in the end, not only forcing the white children to walk home that day but also for two weeks thereafter. The children find hope after despair after all.
