a clearing is an open space in a forest typically one where tree have been cut down. Why is there a "clearing" in the old forest? Why might big ma survey it"without a word"

Long ago Mr. Anderson wanted to buy Big Ma's land, but was refused by Big Ma, so Mr. Anderson decided to cut down some of their trees in hopes of selling the land. His tactics did not work.
