One example of Maha's maturity can be found in her refusal to allow the unicorn to captured and penned. She vows to protect the unicorn until her “dying day” (pg. 89).

In another section, Maha notes the difference between reminders of the past... and the realities of war.

“But don’t you think it’s strange how beautiful old ruins are and how horrible young ruins are, like the ones in Beirut?” (pg. 96)
