Joseph and Triton

Why does Triton refer to Joseph as belonging up a palm tree 'like the rest of his people'? (chapter 1: Kolla)

Joseph's reference alludes to his own feelings of superiority toward Triton, who is in his eyes.... is subservient. Joseph has been a servant at Mr. Salgado's for around two years and believes that his ties to the household make him Triton's superior. He believed that his status as servant had taught him the habits of his superiors, and as a result, he could become one of them.
