What restrictions does the OASIS place on players during challenge quests such as finding a Key or Gate?

In Chapter 11, Wade enters the gate with his avatar and finds himself transported into the movie, War Games, playing the Matthew Broderick character. He then quickly understands that the object is to play the part as closely to the original as possible.
