The author's purpose in writing this book is to illuminate the reader as to the circumstances of being a woman in Tehran. The author speaks out against the violence towards women, the inability for women to move about freely.... to receive an education, and politics. In the end, she leaves her homeland and moves to the United States.

She resented the fact that her veil, which to her was a symbol of scared relationship to god, had now become an instrument of power, turning the women who wore them into political signs and symbols.
