Why does McDunn mean when he responds,"No,Johnny, we're impossible"? In what sense is life today impossible for the sea creature?

McDunn says that the world is so old that humans seem like an impossibility. Life today is so scientifically advanced that the mere concept of a sea monster is unbelievable.
