Day 4

Rabindranath Tagore: Short Stories Lesson Plan

Discussion of Thought Questions

  1. 1

Read this passage from Elder Sister: "How could she, a woman, on her own, protect the hapless Nilmani? What refuge was there? The more she thought, the more her heart filled with horror, and the more it filled with love for her little brother in his plight" (177). How does Shashi manage to get her case heard by so many high status men (the town doctor, the English Deputy Magistrate)? Do Shashi's advantages help her in the end? What does Shashi's tale suggest is possible (or not possible) for women in late 1800s Bengali society? Is there a connection between experiencing horrors and capacity to experience emotion? Does Tagore write about this connection in any other stories?
