What does the lengthy description of Higgins’ laboratory tell you about his character? What is important to him? What is of no importance?

Higgins laboratory is an extension of his work.... his work tools taking precedence in his home. You have to remember, Higgins works of his salon or living room, which immediately tells us that he doesn't place importance on entertaining or social engagements. It's all about work.
