To what extent do the clothes "make the man"?

I have no clue what this question is asking. Please help!

Higgins is making the point that appearance can deceive to a point. In Eliza's case, cleaning up and sporting new clothing can change her to the point that her father doesn't recognize her. He proves that in the right clothing, she can move in whatever circle she likes...... as long as she doesn't open her mouth.
