Alfred Doolittle says "I'm undeserving, and I mean to go on being undeserving." Why does he not want to better himself?

Mr. Doolittle believes that he is limited by class distinction. Why try if it doesn't get you anywhere? Thus, he will take what he can get and remain as he is.
