John Gielgud

The production's main character, Prospero is responsible for everyone's arrival on the island. The former Duke of Milan. Gielgud, one of Britain's most famous actors, played the character of Prospero a number of times in his career, both on stage and screen.

Michael Clark

Prospero's slave on the island. The son of Sycorax. Played by the Scottish dancer and choreographer Michael Clark, who was appointed CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2014 for services to dance.

Michel Blanc

King of Naples and the father of Ferdinand.

Erland Josephson

Played by the Swedish actor Josephson, Gonzalo is an older, more pensive member of the Italian court and a councilor to King Alonso.

Isabelle Pasco

Prospero's daughter, arguably the second most important character. Played by Pasco who, after an initial career in modelling, took to acting.

Tom Bell

Prospero's estranged brother and the Duke of Milan.

Kenneth Cranham

Alonso's brother and a member of the court. Cranham is a British actor whose credits include the films 'Layer Cake' and 'Made in Dagenham'.

Mark Rylance

Alonso's son and Miranda's fiance. Rylance is a well-known British actor, having appeared in the title role of Jez Butterworth's acclaimed play 'Jerusalem'. From 1995-2005, he served as Artistic Director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London.

Gerard Thoolen

An Italian lord who plays a minor role in the course of the play.

Pierre Bokma

Paired with Adrian, an Italian lord whose role is also minor.

Jim van der Woude

One half of the comedic duo, Trinculo is the court jester.

Michiel Romeyn

The other half of the comedic duo, Stephano is a butler.

Paul Russell/James Thierree

Prospero's eyes and ears on the island. A spirit released from imprisonment and employed by Prospero to perform tasks on the island. Thierree comes from a long line of theatrical and cinematic names, in that he is the grandson of the film star Charlie Chaplin and great grandson of the American playwright Eugene O'Neill.
