    Flashback as a Literary Device

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Discussion

    Objective:

    Students will be able to explore and discuss the use of the flashback and as a literary device, both in the play and in other works

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.5

    Structure:

    This play contains two very important flashbacks. For review, ask the class to describe these two flashbacks (Act 2, Scene 1 and Act 2, Scene 4). Then, divide the class into pairs and ask each pair to discuss what the two flashbacks achieve in terms of the play’s narrative arc. Give groups 10 minutes to do this and tell them to take detailed notes.
