What do you know already about Immanuel Kant? Why is he an important figure in the history of modern Western philosophy?
This question is intended to help take the temperature of the room, and get students to engage with the subject matter of the text in a more personal way. Some students may have never heard of Immanuel Kant, even though he is a towering figure in the history of modern Western philosophy. Other students may have heard about some aspect of his life and works, especially his "Categorical Imperative"; these students will also likely know something about the seminal importance of his philosophy.
