Charlotte believes that a woman should show more affection than she (Elizabeth)feels in order to make a man form an attachment to her, and thinks that "happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance." Elizabeth feels than a woman should be on equal footing with a man. She thinks a woman should not have to feign affection to attract a man.
