What does Mr. Collins sudden engagement to Charlotte establish?

I think this establishes that Charlotte was desperate. She felt her marriage options were dwindling and Collins was the best she could do under the circumstances. I think this is one of the sadder aspects of Austen's world. Women felt acquiring a husband was the defining moment for their future.
