The first line of the novel, Pride and Prejudice, serves to set the plot in motion, introduce Bingley's character, and support the major theme of the plot, which revolves around “single men in possession of a good fortune”, and the women who pursue them.

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
