The Bennet girls find Mr. Bingley to be entirely amiable. He dances the first dance with Charlotte Lucas, the Bennets's neighbor and Elizabeth's best friend, but he seems to be most interested in Jane, with whom he dances twice and talks frequently. Upon returning home, Mrs. Bennet attempts to describe the ball to Mr. Bennet, but he is indifferent to the news and becomes quickly irritated with everything his wife says.

“Thank you Mr. Bingley,” said Elizabeth, wondering not for the first time how he could be so very different to his sister. It was as if there had only been so much goodness in his family to go around, and he had laid claim to all of it.”
