A movie is a director’s interpretation of a work of literature. Viewers get one person's take on theme and character. A book speaks directly to the reader allowing the reader to come up with their own conclusions. Reading creates a much more intimate connection with a person than a movie. Also movie adaptations tend to cut parts out to keep the viewing time down.
