By presenting the story in the first person from Montresor's point of View, Poe avoids interpretation of the action. Montresor is in control pf the plot, he decides what to tell and what not to tell. A third-person narration would not allow the reader to see into the minds and hearts of the characters. The story would be balanced and objective, removing the emotion and exposure of Monresor's thoughts and actions.
