what is the author or directors purpose?

I think Poe wanted to capture our imaginations as well as our sense of mystery. In there somewhere is the reader's own anxieties, paranoia, and frailties. Poe knew how to get at our feelings through our imaginations. The Raven is an excellent example of using a dark story to evoke our senses and anxieties.
