What is the speakers explanation of the raven's one response?

Initially the speaker thinks the bird has been trained to say the word. Then he thinks it might have something to do with the metaphysical. It isn't until the latter part of the poem that he infers that that the word "nevermore" is about him and his beloved Lenore.
