Irony of Police
The police are considered as the law enforcer but the irony in the novel is that instead of promulgating laws the police was breaking laws by helping the cartel. Boli goes to the police station in order to ask for help regarding the absence of his parents but the police treat him with indifference. They help the murderers instead of hanging them. The prevailing injustice in the society was amplified by the illegal actions of the law enforcers. They were fanning the fire of devil.
Irony of Church
The church helps the people in finding their answers but in the novel the church and the clergy were corrupt. The irony is that they were causing further disillusionment in the community because of their greed. The clergy was taking bribe from the cartel. Father Gregoria wears expensive accessories which depicts his corrupt nature. The reverend refuses to help Boli and in the crucial circumstances they remain busy in getting their own share from the devil.
Irony of Stone
The children used to believe that the stone holds magnificent powers. The person who would win this stone would get extraordinary powers, but the irony is that it couldn’t save Mosco when he was being murdered. It was called devil’s fire, but it ignited the fire of justice in Boli. After getting the stone, he vows to save his community from the fire of devil i.e. the evil doings of the cartel and the corruption that was deteriorating the society. Another irony is that the stone comes in Boli’s hand, who had no desire to have it.
