God as a symbol of truth
Kierkegaard's explanations reveal that God is a symbol of truth. Different religions believe in a true Supreme Being, which is God. However, Kierkegaard argues that religion is a matter of choice, and one is forced to belong to a particular religious institution. Despite having diverse religions, they all believe that God represents the truth.
Religion
Religion is symbolized by the opium of the masses and the uncertainty of human sin. Kierkegaard narrates that one of the main purposes of religion is to eradicate willful ignorance of the truth. According to the author, corruption of mind leads to willful sin, which is highly condemned by religion. Therefore, religion encourages the masses to remain faithful to God and do what is right at all times.
The learner
The learner embodies submission and obedience to the teacher. According to the author, learners are human beings, and God is the teacher. The teacher is always right, and learners are expected to do what the teacher says and commands. Therefore, learning symbolizes submission.
The bridge
The bridge is a symbol of a spiritual intermediary. God's message and instructions are complex, and an average person cannot understand them. Therefore, priests and church ministers are the spiritual intermediaries who are tasked with interpreting God's message to people. Consequently, the spiritual intermediaries bridge the gap between human beings and God.
The birth of Christ
The birth of Christ symbolizes the salvation of humankind. Religion teaches Christians that the only way to enter into the kingdom of heaven is through Christ. Therefore, the birth of Christ gives hope to Christians that a time is coming when they will reunite with their creator.
