Ngugi uses the theme of religion, specifically Christianity, to critique and expose what he sees as the hypocrisy that accompanies many Christian religious practices. The author does not portray any of his Christian characters sympathetically. Ezekiel Waweru and the Reverend Jerrod Brown, for example, use Christianity for their own interests, they are greedy. Their actions are not what would be defined as Christian, they do not practice what they preach. They are not there for the people spiritually, and they pay no interest to the people or their needs. In addition, Lillian, also a Christian, is depicted as a crazed fanatic.
