The signofocance of the title, Petals of Blood, can be seen in Chapter Two. It is in Chapter Two that Munira takes his students into the field, and one of his students discovers a red flower that they describe as having "petals of blood." The meaning of the title is never fully explained, but that one, red flower in a field of blue and white flowers might be seen to symbolize Munira's feelings of solitude and isolation from his family and the community. It might also serve to foreshadow the future destruction of Ilmorog.
