The Ghost

Maree is a ghost in the play, which is essentially the memory of her, in the memory of her closest friends and fellow inmates Lynette and Gayle. Maree haunts both of her old friends, as they were a tight knit group in the home. Maree committed suicide when she was only fourteen years old, as a result of the horrific abuse she endured, without answer on her cries for help. She is an important image in the book, as she was one of the inmates that didn’t survive the home, which tells a lot of the abuse they went through.

Dr. Fingers

The girls were all forced to go through medical examinations to make sure that there was no spreading of any diseases in the home, which was expected. What was out of the norm was Mr. Fingers, the doctor who didn’t keep to himself when he had the girls at his own disposal. The girls went through a lot of abuse and though the affair wasn’t specifically described, it is an important image as it shows that the girls themselves couldn’t hide from the affairs of the home, even if they tried, since they would eventually be pushed into the hands of Dr. Fingers.

Stepping through the gates

When the women step through the gates of the home, they are put into a new world were misery and sadness follow everyone everywhere they go. Looking at different objects and people, the women re-live the events they went through as children, which is what’s special and important. They meet them head-first, just in order to let the world know what they had been through, as well as confronting their own sleeping demons.
