In your opinion, is the 10,000 hour rule an encouraging or fatalistic lens through which to view the possibility of individual success? How does this rule alter our notion of the American Dream?

Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field. I think this is fatalistic at best. How does one quantify mastery? I think Gladwell turns skills and even ideas into commodities that are attached to monetary or power values. There is seldom mastery in any art or a discipline. When creativity and innovation stops, there is only stagnation and mediocrity.
