Bill Mehlinger, owner of Winn Dixie, had sold “all-american” goods at his store until a refugee employee suggested selling foreign foods for the refugees when business started failing from lack of customers. When his business began to pick up, Melinger was able to hire more staff eventually hiring more refugees than Clarkston citizens. Bill Melinger’s positive response to the refugees brought his store out of debt and brought him closer to the refugees in town.
