Emily very much wanted to please the people around her and she often does things for them that help them in some way. As the most important major character in the story, she often tells us what the author wants us to recognize as the major points of the story. She is emblematic of the people in general; she does not realize how quickly time passes when she is alive and she cannot celebrate the most important moments to the extent that she should. She loves George, dies in childbirth, and in general goes through life thankful, but not truly appreciative how quickly life goes by. By the time she realizes this important lesson, she is dead.
