what is the role and function of the stage manager? How is he similar to or different from the characters in the play?

The stage manager serves as a kind of omniscient narrator filling in the gaps that the audience does not see in the story.  He can give us clues as to what is about to happen, introduce us to characters, highlight important points such as time and place (setting) and in general know what has happened before this point, during this point in the story, and what will happen in the future.  He even fills in a small part occasionally.
