Othello's fit and Macbeth's dagger scene both employ a sense of paranoia and stress. Othello cannot handle his conflicting emotions over Desdemona and her alleged infidelity. He also cannot handle his loss of manhood, the idea of being rendered a cuckold. Macbeth also cannot handle his manhood being questioned. His wife calls him coward unless he kills the king. Macbeth also has conflicting emotions about killing the king. Both Othello and Macbeth struggle to define themselves in the face of these conflicts.
