Othello

Act 3, Scene 4

Othello loved being a bachelor soldier (1.2.25-28). He says he married not to please his lust but because Desdemona seemed worth losing his freedom to.

What is the relation of his feelings to his life as a soldier and the play’s emphasis on reputation?

We must not forget that Othello is a moor, so his entire reputation is based on his military abilities. That is what validates him in the eyes of white nobility and this validation extends to how he views himself.
