What are some challenges and difficulties in one hundred years of solitude?

Perhaps the most difficult challenge faced by the characters is the difficulty of living and respecting traditional ways of life while also being courageous enough to form new ones. This creates tension because both ways of life are in tension, yet seem to be necessary at the same time.
