The chief is only half Indian but he uses his status as a sense of otherness from the rest of the patients. He is a huge man which also sets him apart. The chief has frequent hallucinations which lend a quality of Native Indian mysticism to the character. The men do not interact with Chief in the same way as they do with other patients. His cultural uniqueness plays into the mystery of his character
