Who are the victims of institutionalization?

The patients in the institution were there for various reasons. Many were there by choice. McMurphy entered the institution to avoid the "work farm". Bromden was there to escape society. Whereas, Billy was there due to the damage done by an abusive mother. Others living on the ward were there because of brain damage or medical issues.
