What happened that caused the Chief to "shrink"?

Chief's mother convinced her his father to sell the land and move to civilization. This was devastating to both father and himself. To add to injury, Chiefs mother forced both of them to take her last name further eroding their identities. Chief relates how his father began to "shrink". We can interpret that the Chief felt the same way.
