Fetyukov is a Prisoner who was an office manager on the outside. He begs and scrounges for food and cigarettes, which annoys other inmates. On one occasion, inmates beat him when he tries to take leftovers at mealtime. On another occasion, Captain Buinovsky punches him after Fetyukov shouts at him. Because of his inability to get along with others, Ivan thinks he will not outlast his prison sentence. By contrast Shukhov gets along with his fellow inmates and knows how to circumvent rules without provoking overseers. He is hard working and tries to maintain dignity throughout his ordeal. Even the the guards find Shukhov agreeable in so far as a prisoner can get.
