Ivan was a carpenter in his former life. Math came handy to him in many situations in the camp. He was often asked to board up windows or build a mortar wall. This gave Ivan interesting and steady work that was not too physically demanding. Math also came in handy when he was trading various items (like tobacco, bread, matches....) with other prisoners in the camp.
