The author of Once Upon a Time uses a variety of fairy tale elements in the novel. Her use of simple language, morality tale, and the conflict of good -vs- evil are each examples of fairy tale elements. Gordimer also recreates the tale of Sleeping Beauty. One difference between the two would be Gordimer's decision to play the tale backwards.
