    Mapping & Writing Place

    Kind of Activity:

    Creative Writing

    Objective:

    visualize Dickensian London, and employ literary techniques to convey a clear sense of place

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.3, CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.4

    Structure:

    Students will use Google Maps to map the journey of Sikes and Oliver (page 128) and/or Fagin (page 153).

    After creating a map of their route, students should look back at the text and perform a close reading of it. They should note the use of imagery and sensory language, pacing, and syntax to convey the appearance and atmosphere of the place being described.
