Would Lennie have been considered retarded at the time of the book?

I'm not sure even the word "retarded" would have been widely used for mentally challenged people during this era. Most men in the text describe Lennie as stupid, crazy, or cuckoo. Developmental challenges were not widely understood by the population at that time.
