Of Mice and Men

Why was the work in farms and ranches temporary during the Great Depression?

In Of Mice and Men, Lennie and George both have jobs, but they were only temporary like most jobs during that time. Why is that?

Itinerant workers like George and Lennie still exist today. These people move from place to place following the schedule of crop harvesting. One area might be harvesting strawberries and a few months later a different area is harvesting apples. Itinierant workers work temporarily because when the harvest is over the work is done...... Thus, it's time to move on.
