Why is Crooks a proud, aloof man?

What causes his loneliness?

Crooks is proud because he is an educated, hard working African American from a hardworking family. He's proud of his belongings and proud of his heritage. He is aloof because he isn't accepted and lonely for the same reason. As the only African American on the ranch he experiences segregation and racism daily.... he aloofness is a form of self-protection.
