why does lennie cling to the dead mouse? what might this mouse symbolize?

Lennie finds the mouse a comfort, it's soft, and he loves things that are soft. He doesn't realize at first that he has killed the mouse; he has to be told, but he doesn't want to let it go because he doesn't understand, and it gives him a sense of security...... like a baby's security blanket.
