Why does Curley attack Lennie? What happens to Curley?

Curley had a bad case of small guy complex. He went after bigger guys he thought he could intimidate. A joke was made by one of the men directed towards Curley in the bunk house. Lennie smiled which set Curley off on him. Lennie ends up crushing one of Curley's hands.
