Why does Crooks finally tell Candy that he is no longer interested in the dream farm?

By this point in chapter 4, Crooks is an emotionally broken man. Curley's wife has just threatened and humiliated him. Crooks knows that there are no dreams for men on this ranch, especially colored men like him. Crooks thinks his only place in white society for him is the hovel next to the horses.
