Why did Lennie kill Curleys wife?

Lennie didn't mean to kill Curley's wife. Lennie was petting her soft hair until she got frightened and tried to pull away. Lennie became scared and hung on tighter. Lennie did not want to get in trouble but in the ensuing struggle, broke her neck.
