Mood is the emotional response that a piece of writing evokes in a reader. An author creates mood by giving details about characters, settings, and situations. This novel ends where it began, by the river, but the mood in Chapter 1 is very different from the mood in Chapter 6. Read the following passages and answer the questions.

Chapter One is full of hope for the two men. Even though they've just escaped trouble they're looking to the future. In Chapter Six, the mood changes because hope is lost. It's simply a sad goodbye.
